Protecting our Beaches and Ocean

Sri Lanka’s beautiful coastlines, diverse marine life, and vibrant ocean ecosystems are under growing threat.

Widespread use of single-use plastics, overconsumption, poor waste management by both locals and tourists, and unsustainable practices in fishing, tourism, and industrial activities are putting immense pressure on these natural resources.

The climate crisis is further exacerbating these problems, intensifying risks to both ecosystems and communities.

Protecting the environment is essential - not only to preserve Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and biodiversity but also to safeguard human health and the country’s future.

Our Approach

We believe that you protect what you love. We particularly focus on reconnecting women with the ocean, enabling them to become ocean stewards. We also believe that if you educate one women, it will have a ripple effect - as they will educate their families and communities.

1. Ocean Connection

DYIS6

Reconnect people with the ocean and make them fall in love with their natural environment.

2. Ocean Literacy

Beach

Educate about environmental challenges and how personal choices play a role.

3. Ocean Protection

What We Do

What We Do

Workshops on Ocean Education and Safety

Ocean education and ocean safety are integral parts of our Swim & Surf Programs.

We regularly host theory lessons and workshops, where we discuss environmental issues and explore ways we can make positive changes to keep our oceans safe and healthy.

We have even developed our bilingual SeaSisters Ocean Safety and Protect Our Oceans booklets, in English and Sinhalese.

Furthermore, at the end of our Swim & Surf Programs, all participants pledge to become Ocean Protectors.

Beach Clean

Beach Clean-Ups

Each season, we organise a large beach clean-up together with local partners.

We don’t just collect trash - we also discuss what we find, explore how our consumption habits contribute to the problem, and share ideas for reducing plastic use.

We also encourage our participants to continue the effort by regularly doing smaller beach cleanups on their own.

SeaSisters Ocean School

In 2024, we launched our pilot program, SeaSisters Ocean School, and reached hundreds of girls from local schools in Weligama.

Through engaging talks, we educated them about the importance of the ocean and the opportunities of the blue economy and surf tourism for coastal communities.

We also aimed to inspire these young women to get involved in ocean sports and to become passionate protectors of the ocean.

After this successful pilot, we hope to scale the program and reach even more students in the future.

Ocean Hero

Our new off-season program, Ocean Hero, empowers Sri Lankan girls (aged 10-16) to become ocean protectors.

Through an immersive journey, they connect deeply with their coastlines and learn fascinating new facts about the ocean.

Activities range from beach excursions and quizzes on marine life, to creative workshops like making ocean-inspired jewelry.

We host weekly sessions during the off-season, helping participants gain knowledge, skills, and inspiration to take action for the ocean.
